The best cat breeds for allergy sufferers

Are you a cat lover who also happens to be allergic? We understand that it can then be difficult to find the perfect cat. But there is good news! There are hypoallergenic cat breeds out there that offer the same love and loyalty as other cats, without causing the same troublesome allergic reactions. In this article we go through some of the most hypoallergenic cat breeds, their characteristics and tips for dealing with allergies!

What is a hypoallergenic cat?

Allergenic, also called hypoallergenic, cat breeds are less likely to trigger allergies in humans. This is because they produce fewer allergens, i.e. proteins found in cats' saliva, skin and urine, which are often the cause of allergic reactions. Although no cat is completely hypoallergenic, some breeds produce fewer allergens or shed less fur and are therefore considered more hypoallergenic.

We list 7 hypoallergenic cat breeds:

  • Sphynx: An affectionate and social cat breed with basically no fur and the one you usually mean when you say naked cat. The Sphynx has only a barely visible fur on its body and is therefore sensitive to both cold and sunlight, which makes it best as an indoor cat.

  • Devon Rex: This lively and intelligent cat breed has a special coat that consists almost entirely of undercoat and produces minimal shedding. The Devon Rex also thrives best in the warmth indoors.

  • Oriental Shorthair: The Oriental, as it is also called, is a sociable cat breed with fine, short fur. It sheds very little and regular brushing helps keep it from shedding any loose hairs.

  • Cornish Rex: This is a curious and lively cat breed with a special coat consisting of only one layer, the undercoat, similar to the coat of a Devon Rex. The coat of a Cornish Rex in wavy and soft and it does not shed at all.

  • Siberian Cat: At first glance, it may be difficult to believe that a Siberian Cat is hypoallergenic. But this sociable and long-haired cat breed produces less of the protein that causes allergies, making it hypoallergenic.

  • Neva Masquerade: As the masked variant of the Siberian Cat, the Neva Masquerade also produces less allergens and therefore causes less allergic reactions.

  • Russian Blue: Even the sociable and smart cat breed Russian Blue produces less allergens and barely sheds, which makes it a suitable breed for allergy sufferers.

Managing allergies when living with hypoallergenic cats:

  • Regular grooming: Regular brushing and bathing not only keeps your cat's coat in good condition, but also significantly minimizes loose hair in the home and exposure to allergens. If the cat accepts to be bathed, we recommend using a hypoallergenic special shampoo developed to reduce the amount of allergen. The cat should then be shampooed once every one to two weeks.

  • Allergen-friendly environment: Invest in high-quality air purifiers and vacuum cleaners to effectively capture and eliminate allergen particles from the air and surfaces in your home. These devices work together to ensure that indoor air quality remains as clean as possible. Always clean your home thoroughly and preferably daily.

  • Cleaning routine: Establish a thorough and consistent cleaning routine. Regularly wash bedding, toys and all areas your cat frequents. Using hypoallergenic or allergy-reducing cleaning products can help minimize the build-up of allergens in your home.

  • Allergen-reduction strategies: Implement allergen-reduction strategies, such as designating specific pet-free zones in your home - for example, the bedroom. This will help you create allergen-free spaces for you to retreat to when allergies become troublesome.

  • Monitor your allergies: Be vigilant in observing your allergy symptoms and triggers. Understanding how your body reacts to allergens and potential patterns can help you better manage your allergies while living with your hypoallergenic cat.
