Vomiting that occurs rarely

A cat vomiting once in a while does not have to be a symptom of something dangerous or a serious disease, but it can actually be normal for the individual!

There are of course many reasons why a cat may vomit from time to time, one example of something that can cause occasional vomiting in cats is hairballs. Cats are very good at cleaning themselves with their tongue, which leads to them ingesting a lot of hairs which then form hairballs in their stomach. Cats cannot break down hairs, which either come out in their faeces or come up as vomit in the form of hairballs. Despite the name 'hairballs', these are not actually round as they sound, but are actually cylindrical in shape.

Another reason why cats sometimes vomit is if they have eaten something inappropriate, such as food that has gone bad or a substance that they are sensitive to and react to by vomiting.

However, if a cat vomits several times a week or if the vomiting increases over time, it may be a sign that the cat is not well. It is not normal for a cat to vomit so often! Regular and frequent vomiting can be caused by many different things, apart from stomach problems, cats may vomit as a symptom of kidney disease, pancreatitis, thyroid problems, tumour disease, or a food allergy for example.

You should always take vomiting in your cat seriously, if your cat vomits frequently or if your cat starts vomiting more than what is considered normal, contact a vet to have your cat checked out!
